Intergenerational Volunteering
NEW DIRECTIONS
Intergenerational Arts Project
Intergenerational Volunteering
Intergenerational practice aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities that promote greater understanding and respect between generations.
Intergenerational practice is inclusive, building on the positive resources that younger and older people have to offer each other and those around them.
Beth Johnson Foundation
Intergenerational volunteering activities / projects through Worcester Volunteer Centre bring together younger volunteers aged between 11-25 and older volunteers aged over 50 to share skills and experiences. Through this volunteers learn from each other, working together to address a community need.
Current work :
Worcester Cinema Through The Ages
This project will look at trends and the changes that have taken place in cinema over the last century. It will examine, by looking at records and capturing oral histories, the films people watched, the picture houses themselves and how they were run compared to now. Taking a journey through the rise of cinema, the project will track it’s importance for news coverage during the war, the ‘golden era’ and its demise in the 70s.
We will look at the history and culture behind the cinemas in Worcester today as well as those that have either sadly been demolished or abandoned. We will pay particular attention to the oldest cinema in the city, the Scala Theatre, built in 1922 that remained independent until its closure in 1973.
